Perth Fringe Festival is in full swing and if you’re anything like me you adore the arts and like to take full advantage of the shows. This year there are a tonne of shows on for us bookish nerds so I thought I’d compile them all in a list for you:
For the grammar-nerd…
Nerdy and pun-filled Louisa loves the English language but it’s hard when people throw it around willy-nilly. All Louisa wants is someone to snuggle up to and whisper puns in several languages – is that too hard? Louisa Fitzhardinge and Greg Lavell bring back their sold out show this Fringe season.
For the people who want to learn something new…
The Fellowship of Australian Writers WA brings to you the Perth Writers Salon, five 3-hour workshops covering topics from overcoming writers block to taking heroes on journeys. Campbell Jefferys is an award-winning WA writer with nine books under his belt as well as a number of articles. Learn from an experienced writer at one of five workshops.
This creative writing masterclass is designed to reconnect your heart to your writing life. With the theme “love and the confessional self” this workshop welcomes new and experienced writers. This workshop introduces the idea of reflective writing practice to generate fresh connectivity and hopefully will inspire you to take new tactics to your material. This workshop is hosted by Susan Bradley Smith, an award-winning creative writer and essayist.
For the person who loves story time, or is a story teller…
Poems, stories, songs and more can be heard at this spoken-word event. The event includes both well-known names as well as an open-mic section, so come along for a listen or to be a performer yourself.
Duration: varies depending on session
This is a trilogy of performances exploring Kahn’s famous foray into erotic nihilism. A lot of silly stories from monasteries to manga.
Storyteller and kid’s entertainer extraordinaire Glenn Swift will take the kids on a creative storytelling journey using classic songs and story book characters. A great way to celebrate summer at the beach with friends and family.
For those who enjoy a laugh…
After successful tours in Australia and Edinburgh, this compilation show features a rotation of comedians and storytellers talking all things book-related.
For the Shakespeare lover…
This a satirical retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Whether you’ve watched Baz Luhrmann’s film, studied it in high school or are a full-on Shakespeare nerd, this show will have something for you to enjoy. Bogan Shakespeare is brought to you by Perth-based writers, performers and comedians.
For those looking to broaden their horizons…
Three dancers tell the untold story of 19-year-old British journalist Dorothy, who rode to the front line of World War I to write the story of the century but ended up fighting for her life.
Fringe Festival runs from 17th January to 16th February. For the full program head on over to the Fringe World website
