The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips by Michael Morpurgo

A review by editor Ailish Beahan

Michael Morpurgo, a popular author of school age fiction, is well known for his books Why the Whales Came, A Medal For Leroy, and Kensuke’s Kingdom. Set in 1943, The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips is a well-woven and uplifting narrative that I first enjoyed as a 10 year old, but still recommend to adults and kids alike. Told via young Lily Tregenza’s diary entries, the story shines through the dark setting of the war. It follows themes of friendship, love and hope; revolves mostly around Tips, Lily’s pet cat; and contains more than a few gratifying twists.

The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips is a heartwarming and enjoyable read, I recommend it as a break between books of a more heavy content. It’s one of those books I will keep coming back to.
