Editors

Our Editors

Our editors are our life force. These dedicated volunteers live and breathe writing and reading and have made it their mission to help emerging writers succeed. We’ve seen editors come and go according to the hectic lives these champions lead, but our current line-up is as follows:

Editor-in-Chief

Jemimah Halbert Brewster

Age: 27

Role at Underground Writers: Editor-in-Chief/Operations Coordinator. I coordinate literary operations, which mainly involves removing malignant tautology and unnecessary commas and semi-colons. Also coordinating who does what and when. But who coordinates me??

Favourite book and/or author and/or seriesRight now: Jackie French’s historical fiction and sci-fi works, Julie Ko’s Portable Curiosities, the anthology Defying Doomsday, all of Douglas Adams’ work and Terry Pratchett’s work, the Red Dwarf series, everything ever written by  Geraldine Brooks, Isabel Allende, Scott Westerfeld, Helen Fielding, and Kerry Greenwood, plus many, many graphic novels, too many to name here.

Study, either current or pastI have a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in creative writing, I studied literature at Cambridge University, and am currently studying a certificate in AusLan.

Wildest ambition in writing: For readers to become lost in the worlds and characters that I create. Also, on a more practical level, to make a living from it.

Your passion in the written word: Linked and layered short stories set in the same universe but across different characters. I lvoe a good novel, but short stories are more my jam at the moment.

Your passions outside of writing: Reading, riding my motorbike, binge-watching sci-fi, cooking, being a mermaid.

Your current project/s: As always: Underground Writers is my main project. However, I am also working on a short story collection that is part spec-fic, part Steampunk fiction.

Quirks and quotes you’d like to share: Drinking tea fuels my writing.

The Team

Dylan Dartnell

Study, either current or past: Bachelor of Arts: Writing, with a minor in Editing & Publishing.

Wildest ambition in writing: Honestly, to keep evolving as a writer.

Your passion in the written word: Inspiring, authentic stories which pay careful attention to language.

Your passions outside of writing: Stand-up comedy and running (the latter is a joke).

Fred Woolhouse

Age: 27

Role at Underground: Bookstore Manager

Favourite book and/or author and/or series:  My favourite author is undoubtedly Stephen King and I particularly adore his masterpiece ‘The Stand’. Otherwise I have a soft spot for a range of other horror, fantasy & sci-fi titles. most notably the works of Philip K. Dick and Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Best books you’ve read by recommendation: American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I decided to give this monster of a book a go after reading rave reviews and I was not disappointed.

Your passions outside of reading: Movies, Cricket & travelling across the world from time to time.

Quirks and Quotes you’d like to share:My favourite literary quote of all time is from Oscar Wilde – “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

Jess Gately

Role at Underground: Circulation & Marketing Manager

Age: 27

Favourite book and/or author and/or series: My love for fantasy and sci-fi I owe to my Dad who introduced me to David Eddings’ Belgariad series, Adam Douglas’ Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the trilogy that was not actually a trilogy, and Orson Scott Card’s Enders Game series. To this day I still absolutely adore all three series however I have also come to love Bill Bryson thanks to one of the former Underground editors (Pauli) who bought me Mother Tongue for my 21st birthday. After that I couldn’t put down A Short History of Nearly Everything.

Study, either current or past: I studied Geography & Biology with a minor in Writing at uni. I’ll be going on to do my Masters in Professional Writing & Publishing in 2018.

Wildest ambition in writing: I want to make a living out of my writing- not just writing my own stories but helping others to write theirs!

Your passions outside of writing: I am mad about travel and about exploring different cultures. I also love photography. I am a massive nerd though so anime and superhero movies/tv shows are high on my list of priorities when it comes to spare time.

Your passion in the written word: I am a novel writer. I like big epic journeys and characters I can fall in love with. You guessed it, I mainly write fantasy and sci-fi, however after several years of some serious travel and working as a tour guide in London, I have broken into travel writing.

Your current project/s: I am working on an anthology of stories from around the world, trying to get my grandmother to agree to let me tell her story, a never ending pile of ideas that will need to one day make it to paper, and learning the finer arts of photography.

Quirks and Quotes you’d like to share: “It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane”- Philip K Dick; “All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost” – J.R.R. Tolkein.

Your passion in the written word: poetry, short stories, fiction novels and scripts

Your passions outside of writing: Reading sounds like a cop-out but it’s more of an addiction than passion at this stage

Your current project/s: Planning on writing a graphic novel about a support dog seeking revenge against humans who mistreated her friends in the shelter. Events turn sinister when her new owner is accused of committing the acts and she ends back where it all began.

Quirks and quotes you’d like to share: “Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.” ― Lewis CarrollAlice in Wonderland

Shelley Timms

Age: 22

Role: Interview Coordinator

Study, either current or past: Writing and Editing Major at Curtin.

Wildest ambition in writing: Edit and curate an anthology!

Your passion in the written word: After spending time in the ECU newsroom I discovered a passion for editing work and using WordPress to publish it on the ECU Daily website. I am also an avid reader and spend a lot of time perusing the shelves of the city library. I don’t believe I have much of a talent for creative writing per se, but I am passionate about working with authors and helping them get their work published.

Your passions outside of writing: coffee! Buying books I don’t need, and I’m really enjoying curating the Underground Spotify playlists!

Your current project/s: trying to survive uni, while planning a wedding and working part time. I’m also in the process of setting up freelance writing work for my mum’s small business.

Quirks and quotes you’d like to share: “You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.”  – Madeleine L’Engle

Jess Rae

Age: 21

Favourite book and/or author and/or series: I imagine this would be like choosing my favourite child but the books/series that have resonated with me for years are: the Vampire Academy series, The Book ThiefThe Studies series and any poetry by Charles Bukowski.

Study, either current or past: Double Bachelor of Arts and Business and Beauty at TAFE

Your passion in the written word: I enjoy writing anything, except poetry, love reading it- can’t for the life of me write it.

Your passions outside of writing: Outside of writing I’m a makeup artist; specifically I love makeup for film and theatre.
