Underground Writers have announced that they will launch an online bookstore called Underground Books which will only stock debut Australian titles. All profits from the store will go towards supporting the group’s projects which provide information, education, and encouragement to emerging Australian writers.
Underground Operations Manager and Editor-In-Chief, Jemimah Halbert Brewster, said the bookstore will enable the not-for-profit to further its operations supporting emerging Australian writers in two distinct ways.
‘Our hope is that we become the first port of call for those looking to find a new favourite Australian author,’ she said, ‘We can guarantee that the books we stock will be Australian debut titles so that readers don’t have to do the research themselves.’
In the meantime, all profits from the bookstore will help Underground Writers expand their operations to provide workshops, information sessions, and events to help emerging writers gain access to the information they need to be successful.
‘The literary business is undoubtedly geared towards people who can afford to write,’ Halbert Brewster said, ‘which is why we’re trying to find ways to get this information out there for free. We hope to help close some of the gaps that are preventing more diverse voices in the industry, and this bookstore is a legitimate way for book-lovers to help us achieve that.’
The bookstore is set to launch in August. Those wishing to be notified of the store’s opening can join the mailing list at https://underground-writers.org. Publishers are encouraged to get in contact with Marketing and Social Media Manager Jess Gately at firstname.lastname@example.org in order to discuss titles that may be appropriate for the store to stock.
