Artists and writers are invited to submit expressions of interest to participate in the 2018 Emerging Writers Festival, including ideas for events, topics and conversations they want to be included in the festival. Deborah Rogers Foundation Writer’s Award
This £10,000 (US$13,300) is open to unpublished writers residing within the British Commonwealth and Eire. Seeking submissions of 20-30,000 words of a work in progress, fiction or non-fiction, which is not under option or contract. Entries close 13 December.
Seeking up to 60 lines of poetry on any theme with a fee of $10 per entry. Open to 15th December.
Varuna’s Copyright Agency Fellowships for First Nations Writers are open to all writers, published or unpublished, who are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and are currently living in Australia. It is open to all genres of fiction, narrative non-fiction, poetry, children’s books, graphic novels, dramatic/screen writing, writing for radio, translation, essays or short fiction. Seeking an emerging First Nations critic based in Melbourne to intern with Witness throughout 2018. The First Nations Intern will work as part of the core Witness team. They will be responsible for writing a review or essay once a month that reflects on an aspect of performance culture. Alison Croggon and Robert Reid will provide mentoring to help develop and focus critical skills. The internship includes a stipend of $5000 over ten months. Applications close 20th December.
River Styx Micro-Fiction Contest
This contest carries a first prize of US$1500. Writers may submit stories of up to 500 words and up to three stories with each entry. First, second and third place winners and honourable mentions will be published in the 100th issue of River Styx. Entries close 31 December.
Danahy Fiction Prize
The Danahy Fiction Prize is an award of US$1000 and publication in Tampa Review given annually for a previously unpublished work of short fiction. Seeking manuscripts between 500 and 5000 words, but stories falling slightly outside this range will also be considered. Each entrant receives a one-year subscription to Tampa Review, and entries close 31 December.
Seeking poetry on any theme and of any length. Entry is €12 per poem with unlimited entries allowed, closing 31st December.
Nowhere Magazine’s Fall Travel Writing Contest
Nowhere Magazine is seeking stories that possess a powerful sense of place. Entries can be fiction, nonfiction or essay and first prize is US$1000. Stories should be between 800 and 5000 words and must not have been previously chosen as a winner in another contest. Previously published work is accepted. Entries close 1 January.

An online periodical that adheres to the limitations of Twitter publishing. They consider all types of fiction with one condition – the story must be based on science. Accepting short fiction, up to 150 characters, and long fiction, between 150 and 200 characters. Submissions are open from the 10th to the 24th of every month.
