2017 Grieve Writing Competition

In honour of Grief Awareness month (August), the Hunter Writers Centre is seeking submissions of short stories, up to 500 words, or poetry, up to 36 lines. For writers over 18 years, theme is to express grief and loss. Closing 9th June.

Overland special winter issue

Overland literary magazine is currently submissions of no more than 4,000 words for a special online fiction edition themed around ‘Our hour’. Online contributors will be paid $150 per story, with submissions closing 11th June.

Griffith Novella Project V: Storied Lives

The Griffith Review is seeking submissions for their Novella Project competition.  2017’s theme is Storied Lives: Making a Difference, entry is AU$60 for non-subscribers, and submissions should be 10,000-25,000 words. Closing 12th June.

Gem Street: Dystopia

An international writing competition seeking dystopic fiction up to 3,500 words for the next ‘Gem Street’ anthology. The theme is dystopia, but there are no genre or style requirements. Closing 14th July.

The Norton Writer’s Prize

An  annual award for an outstanding essay written by an undergraduate. Submissions close 15th June.

Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Colour Award

This award is an annual grant of $1,500 for an emerging writer of colour. An unpublished writer is preferred, although publication of one work of short fiction or academic work will not disqualify an applicant. This grant is intended to support the recipient in activities related to crime fiction writing and career development. Closing 15th June.

Voiceworks issue #109: Sprawl

Voiceworks is open to Australian residents under 25 years old and is currently seeking submissions of short fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. Guidelines and limitations apply to each format of writing and visual art submissions, and it is recommended that you pitch for comics and creative nonfiction pieces:

Nonfiction pitches: pitches due 11th June, completed work no more than 3,000 words due 25th June

Short fiction: no more than 3,000 words, submissions close 25th June

Poetry: no more than 100 lines, submissions close 25th June

Art and comics: due 23 July (pitches for comics recommended before this deadline)

Ubud Writer’s Festival Emerging Writers Prize
