Monash Undergraduate Prize in Creative Writing

This prize seeks entries of 1,500-3,000 words of creative writing, including fiction, creative non-fiction, and short stories on any theme. Open to all undergraduate students currently enrolled in Australia or New Zealand – a course code and student number are required to submit. Closing 15th April

Rachel Funari Prize for Fiction 2018

The theme of this year’s Rachel Funari Prize for Fiction is ‘Metamorphosis’, with a focus on women’s stories. Stories must engage with the theme and be no longer than 2,000 words, for Australian residents only. Closing 20th April.

Dulcie Stone Writing Competition

The Dulcie Stone Writers Competition is open to Victorian residents with intellectual disability. The theme for the 2018 competition is: Community – Here I Come! What gives life meaning and purpose? What does a good life in the community look like? Works can be up to 1,000 words or a storyboard of up to three A4 pages of drawings. Closing 27th April.

Curtin STAGE ONE: Artist in Residence

‘An initiative of the Theatre Arts at Curtin University, offering a Western Australian playwright the opportunity to write and premiere a new play. The university is currently seeking a 1-page Expression of Interest from playwrights, with work to be produced in the Studio at the Blue Room Theatre (3-8 December 2018). It could be a new project or a play you’ve already written that has yet to be produced. Expressions of interest close Friday 27 April.

Voiceworks issue #111: Drag

Inspired by the theme ‘Drag, Voiceworks magazine is seeking pitches and pieces from writers under 25: submissions for nonfiction, fiction and poetry are all closed, but art and comics pitches are due 29th April.

Overland ‘False documents’ special issue

‘Fiction disguised as or in the guise of ‘real’ textual artefacts: recipes, shopping lists, transcripts, court summons, emails, Wikipedia entries, guest books, contracts, passive-aggressive post-its, report cards – anything that tells a story through an otherwise ‘real’ document. Closing 30th April.

The Best of Times Short Story Competition

Seeking humorous short stories on any theme up to 2,500 words. Closing 30th April.

Craft Short Fiction Award

Entry is $20 per story. Seeking fiction submissions up to 6,000 words – previously unpublished work only. Closes 30th April.

Sutherland Shire Literary Competition

Entry is $15 per poem/story. Entrants must be Australian residents over 18 years of age. Seeking fiction up to 2,000 words, and free and traditional verse up to 80 lines. Closing 30th April.

Black Inc. Best Summer Stories

Seeking submissions for Black Inc.’s Best Summer Stories anthology. Closing 30th April.

Alan Marshall Short Story Award

Entries are $20 each, unless the entrant is 18+ and living, working or studying in the Shire of Nillumbik. Entries close 30th April.

Nillumbik Ekphrasis Poetry Award 2018

Entries are $12, unless the entrant is 18+ and living, working or studying in the Shire of Nillumbik. There is also a Youth Category for poets aged 11-18 years and their entry is free. poems are invited to respond with 12-line poems to artworks from the Baldessin and Friends commemorative folio, recently acquired for the Nillumbik Shire Art Collection. The artworks are on display at Diamond Valley Library, or can be viewed online from the competition page. Closing 30th April.

The Big Issue Fiction Edition 2018

Seeking stories of any genre and theme, entry is FREE, and every author published is paid $500. Stories should be 300-3,000 words and must be previously unpublished, and submissions are limited to one per person. Closing 1st May

Cordite 87: DIFFICULT

Accepting submissions of poetry (process, comics, visual, concrete) and micro-fiction (up to 500 words). The theme for this issue is ‘Difficult’. Submissions close 20th May.

Griffith Review 62: All Things Equal, Novella Project VI

Open to citizens and residents of Australia and New Zealand only. Seeking works of original fiction and non-fiction between 8,000 and 20,000 words that respond to the topic brief entitled All Things Equal – a full outline of the brief is available on the submission page. Closing 21st May.
