Wollongong Writers Festival Short Story Prize 2017

This prize is awarded to a story up to 2,500 words on the theme ‘World-Changing Words’. The winning entry will receive $1,000 and publication in Mascara Literary Review. This competition is open to everyone, and entry is $15 to be paid via PayPal. Entries close 15th September.

The Horne Prize

Seeking submissions of exceptional essays up to 3,000 words written between 13th July and 18th September. The piece must address some part of the theme ‘Australian Life’, and must be grounded in interviews and observation. Submissions close 18th September.

The richest short story prize in the world with a first prize of £30,000. Seeking stories up to 6,000 words, no entry fee. The story can be published or unpublished. Entries close 28th September.

Boston Review Aura Estrada Short Story Contest

Accepting pieces up to 5,000 words, entry is US$20, closing 1st October.

Margaret River Short Story award

Accepting open-theme short stories up to 3,000 words, entry is $15 each and $10 for additional entries. They also have a Southwest prize open to residents of the South West of Western Australia – full list of eligible areas on website. Electronic copies are not accepted, and all entries must be post-marked by 10th October.

Toowoomba Repertory Theatre Playwriting Competition

Seeking previously unpublished and unperformed scripts of 50-75 minutes in length. Entry fee $40, closing 30th September.
